The City encourages and may financially assist employees in acquiring external training and education to help them improve their job skills and complement their informal on-the-job training. All assistance must be approved by the City Manager.

A. SPECIALIZED TRAINING: The City Manager may assign staff to attend various specialized training courses, conferences, seminars and workshops for the purpose of developing specific skills. Additionally, in consultation with the City Manager, supervisors may require that an employee complete certain training to maintain or upgrade overall effectiveness. These training activities are to be considered a part of the normal work of the City and the City will pay the cost of programs it requires.

Tuition Reimbursement Program:
The City recognizes that educational development is important and should be encouraged. Our Tuition Reimbursement program was established to provide an opportunity for Full Time Employees to obtain additional education or training in order to increase their competence in their present jobs and to prepare for future advancements within their department. The reimbursements given to the employee will be specific to funds spent for classes that are directly related to the position being held at that time.
To assist employees with obtaining advanced training, the City may enter into an agreement with the employee which states that the employee is attending (x) amount of hours at an accredited university or Vo-Tech and the tuition and fees are as listed.
With pre-approval of the City Manager & the Dept. Head, the City will reimburse an employee, for up to six (6) hours per semester totaling not more than $1000 a year, or $500 per semester. It will be agreed that if the employee doesn’t receive a B or better, no funds will be reimbursed.
Any special license or certification that is required by the City as part of the job description, will be paid for by the City. The cost of license renewal will also be paid. In addition, the City may pay for prepatory school in advance of the test. The City will pay for the employee to retake the test once. If the employee fails to pass, they must pay for the third attempt themselves. The employee will have 1 year from date of hire to obtain the required certification.

B. USE OF CITY FACILITES: as a benefit of employment, the city extends to all employees use of city facilities to include: the Municipal Pool (single season pass), Riverside Golf Course (individual membership), and the Acme Brick Park Fitness Center (single membership). Volunteer Fire Fighters may receive single memberships at the facilities listed above.

C. LONGEVITY: Longevity is a benefit paid to employees to recognize their long term commitment to the City and to recognize the benefit of their long term employment. After completing one full year of employment an employee is eligible for longevity benefits.
These benefits are paid at the rate of:
0 – 5 years = $6 for each month completed, times (x) the number of years, minus the first 12 months of employment.
Example: 4 years = 48 months – 12 months x $6 = $216
. 5 – 10 years at $6.50 a month
10 – 15 years at $7 a month
15 – 20 years at $7.50 a month
20 + years at $8 a month
An employee will not be paid longevity for the first year of employment. The months after his/her anniversary date, up through Dec 31, will be paid at the appropriate rate. Checks may be issued prior to Thanksgiving but will be for the period through December 31. The time frame is the calendar year. An employee must be employed on December 1st in order to receive longevity pay; it is not pro-rated at termination, or when leaving employment.
